Everyone has something to share, it doesn't have to be big and you don't have to be an expert. Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process or dating system whose purpose is to encourage people to meet a large number of new people. Its origins are credited to Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of Aish HaTorah, originally as a way to help Jewish singles meet and marry. For those who haven't been speed dating, the concept is simple enough...
  • Participants are rotated to meet each other over a series of short "dates"
  • These "dates" usually last from 3 to 8 minutes.
  • At the end of each "date", a bell will sound signalling the participants to move on to the next date.
  • At the end of the event participants submit to the organizers a list of who they would like to provide their contact information to.
  • If there is a match, contact information is forwarded to both parties.

That's all well and good but, HOW do we SPEED LEARN?


Well it's quite simple! We borrow some of the concepts from Speed dating and tweak them to create meaningful and efficient educational conversations.

What do you need to bring with you?

  1. Bring your laptop or mobile charged so you can demonstrate.
  2. You should adopt some form of notetaking. Whether this takes the form of hard copy or soft copy notes is entirely up to you.
  3. Have a mental list of 3-5 things you want to share. These could include:
  • A learning strategy you have found successful
  • A mobile app you use for personal/professional/classroom management
  • A mobile app your students use to learn
  • An application you use in the classroom
  • A webtool (Web2.0 etc) that you use in the classroom
  • A tech tip that has made your life easier
  • A classroom management strategy
  • Anything else 1:1 related that you want to share
  • A student work sample perhaps?

The Speed Learning Rules:

  • Find a partner. Preferably, it should be someone you don't know.
  • The etiquette is to introduce yourselves first before you discuss your resource/s.
  • You will have 10 minutes for your Speed Learning "date". That's 5 minutes for each person to address as many of the reflection prompts as possible with your partner (see below).
  • You will be provided a warning prompt at 5 minutes which indicates that you are halfway through your Speed Learning "date".
  • At 10 minutes, a final prompt will sound indicating the Speed Learning "date" is over.
  • Find a new partner and the process will repeat itself.

Reflection Prompts (for use during your Speed Learning "date"):

  1. The resource/s: What is the resource/s you are willing to share?
  2. The technical blurb: How does the resource work?
  3. The student learning: How have you used this resource in your learning environment?
  4. The quality teaching: How does this resource address quality teaching?
  5. The pros and cons: What are some of the things to watch out for? What are some of the advantages of this resource?
  6. The reality: Do you have any student work samples that utilise this resource that you can share?
  7. The options: Do you know of any alternatives to this resource?
  8. The advice: How would you recommend your Speed Learning date utilise this resource?
